Haley & Joey Grayson Highlands State Park Engagement Session
Heading up to the Highlands of Virginia is one of my favorite things to do. I grew up roaming the mountains and valleys of Southwest Virginia. You would often find me hiking on the Appalachian Trail on weekend overnighters and fishing the Holston Rivers for Smallmouth Bass on during the summer months. So as soon as Haley and Joey showed interested in doing a Grayson Highlands State Park Engagement Session, I was thrilled. There are a lot of memories for me in that park and the surrounding mountains!
But we can save that for a different blog post some time…
This Grayson Highlands State Park Engagement Session Is Going To Be Fun!
For Haley & Joey, I knew they were going to be a lot of fun to shoot with! They have both traveled to so many different places around the world and have experienced life overseas in a way that many Americans haven’t. It is always a pleasure to work with couples that have spent a lot of time overseas. We are able to kind of bonding and understanding each other just a little bit better.
After making all of the arrangements with Haley and Joey for their Grayson Highlands State Park Engagement Session, we met up there are a Sunday afternoon. It was early in the season (March) and we were not able to go all the way to the visitor’s center on top of the mountain, but that was fine. We parked down at the Massie Gap Parking Area and followed the connector trail up to the mountain towards Mount Rogers, the tallest mountain in Virginia.
It was there that we made magic! The warm afternoon sunlight was perfect, despite the crazy strong and cold breeze.

How did y’all meet?
We were able to meet online through a dating app. We found out that we had several mutual friends in common and similar interests.
When and where did you go on your first date?
Lynchburg, VA on an all day adventure date
Tell me about your first date together?
Joey and I met up at a coffee shop in Lynchburg, VA, where he had spent so much time previously in school. He knew the area well and all the small places to go. We went on a tour of his old university and then he took me out on the town after some coffee, he knows I’m addicted 😉 We went on a small walk and that’s where he first held my hand *gasp*.
He then took me out to eat after an afternoon walk talking and making good initial impressions and memories together. We went after that to the river walk where there was plenty of shade and little romantic lookouts, this is where he kissed me first. This first date was full of laughing and enjoying each others company, we both knew we wanted to spend time together again, so we planned for that.
How did you fall in love?
For me, it was the little things. Joey has always taken notice of the small things that I say and he has always been observant. He was always there when I needed him, either a FaceTime call, a phone call, or a text away. He always stops things for me. He has treated me the same from day one, loving me, listening, and caring.
When/where did he/she propose?
Joey tricked me! We were supposed to go to Washington state to see my grandmother and have a layover in Denver, CO, where he planned to propose to me as this is where I called home for years and have always considered a special place to me. When this trip was cancelled, Joey panicked a little. He then convinced me to take a trip to Colorado regardless of our initial trip being canceled, I said yes. We were a day in to our trip and I was showing him my favorite places and we found ourselves at the most beautiful place on earth, Garden of the Gods.
We made our way up to a rocky path where there were no people and this is where he began to kneel down and propose to me, I of course began cry laughing and said YES! After we had our private moment, he then told me my very best friends were both on their way to greet us. He had so many surprises for me on this trip!
What are you most excited about for your wedding?
I am so so excited to have our friends and family all together celebrating with us!

Switzerland
What is your most favorite thing about each other?
joey always has our future in mind and his favorite thing is that I always laugh at his jokes
How have you grown as a couple since you first started dating?
We have continued to bring our faith into the relationship
Favorite quirk about each other
Joey eats fries every single day. Haley always has to have things organized.
How do you feel most loved by your partner?
Joey feels most loved by haley when we spend quality time together doing everyday things. Haley feels most loved when joey does little things around the house for her.
First impression of each other?
Joey: she talks a lot. Haley: he talks a lot and is tall!!
